What Next For The Survivors of Avengers Arena?

Avengers Arena comes to an end in November, and it's been said that it isn't the end for the characters involved. In an interview with CBR, Marvel Editor-in chief Axel Alonso has stated a new series will start, with a new creative team once the series has ended.

Everyone's still pretty tight-lipped at Marvel when it comes to who survives, how it ends, are the other kids really dead, and so many other unanswered questions. Axel hints at a possible new team of heroes formed out of the ashes of Murderworld.

Here's some exclusive Avengers Arena art by Kev Walker featured on CBR. Not sure which issue this comes from, but it must be near the end, with very few teens left standing. Hazmat looks in a lot of pain, and Anachronism is covered in blood.

ClanDestine Marvel Age Promo Art by Alan Davis

Robert Jewell - This was a back cover on Marvel Age that I bought from Alan the first time I met him in SDCC back in the 90's. It had all sorts of stuff glued on it, but Alan actually helped me peel it all off the board. Out of everything Alan has ever worked on, ClanDestine is still my favorite!

Excalibur Issue 1 Cover Roughs by Alan Davis

I found this by Alan Davis on his site, roughs for the cover of Excalibur issue #1.

Alan said about these...The cover rough to Excalibur 1 and an unused alternative. Note that the 'humour element' was a subdued aside in the first option-- Until Terry Kavanagh decided to make it the primary focus.

Thor and Spider-Man were Members of Excalibur

I was searching through back issues of Excalibur for a panel to post, when I came across this interesting panel.

Issue #46 of Excalibur, published in 1992, which features Kylun, on Earth 148, fighting against that Earth's version of Excalibur. This Excalibur comprises of that realities version of Captain Britain, Black Knight, Thor, and Spider-Man, who are pretty much Zombies, after being slain by Necrom.

This is the lead up to the major story arc which involved 'Necrom' becoming the 'Anti-Phoenix', the introduction, or re-introduction of Kylun (Colin) back to Earth 616, and the explanation of  why Excalibur was formed. This story also increased Excalibur in size, and introduced us to Cerise, Feron, and Kylun, not to mention Micromax's involvement, all drawn by the fantastic Alan Davis.

Avengers Arena #15 Art

In an interview between Dennis Hopeless, and Newsarama.com, art contained within the pages of issue 15 was added to the interview showing the surviving super-teens battling against some huge, monstrous creature. This all leads up to the upcoming finale entitled 'Boss Level.

The Blinding of Betsy Braddock

This panel is from Captain Britain issue #13 from 1976 drawn by the magnificent Alan Davis. This is the moment when Slaymaster blinds Betsy Braddock, who has stood in as the new Captain Britain after her brother Brian quit.

There were so many panels that I could have chosen in this story, but none so dramatic as this one. The cruel anger evident on Slaymasters face, the shape of his fingers as he delivers the blow leaves you in no doubt what pain he's just inflicted, the helplessness of Betsy in Slaymasters grip, and the small powerful sentence '... it is cruel, and brutal, and blind'.

I Am Hurricane!

With the apparent lack of all things Marvel UK, I thought I'd start a new daily feature... Each day, time permitting, I will post a different panel taken from a Marvel UK connected comic or graphic novel. There's no formula or sense of organisation attached to my choice each day, apart from a panel that for me jumped out of a page.

My first panel chosen is from 'Captain Britain' issue #4 from 1976, featuring the explosive appearance of Hurricane.

Herb Trimpe was the artist, and the story was written by Chris Claremont. I love the big, bombastic, bold statement uttered by Hurricane, so, so 70's, but so, so great, and just the sort of thing that would excite me as a child in the 1970's.

Avengers Arena Finale in November

Marvel have just released their solicitations for November, which sees the end of Avengers Arena, in issues #17 & #18.

The above cover shows just five members left, one of them being Anachronism from the Braddock Academy. This does mean that Captain Britain didn't come to the young heroes rescue, as observed in my last post.
